President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at the Ford's Theatre
in Washington. He is remembered for his efforts to preserve the
union during the Civil War and is considered to be a martyr to
this cause. The Lincoln Memorial lies at one end of Memorial Bridge
and has a clear view of the National Mall, stretching past the
Washington Monument to the Capitol Building on Capitol Hill. The
Memorial is a Greek style temple, with a column for each of the
32 states in the Union (at the time of construction), which houses a 19 foot tall marble statue
of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. Around
the interior walls are inscriptions taken from some of Lincolns
most prominent speeches.
